An animated site and homes map for a Suffolk children's care provider

Web Design #  Website Animation #  CMS Build

Able runs small therapeutic children's homes across Suffolk and North Essex, caring for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, learning difficulties and autism. The group is family-founded and more than 20 years old, with three homes open and three more on the way. It takes referrals from local authorities and trains its own care teams from their first shift.

Able's website pages laid out at an angle: home, homes, careers, training, insights and aboutAble's homes map on a tablet, with the nuthatch perched on the frame

THE RUNDOWN

Able's old site was a basic WordPress build, looked after by its IT company. It said what Able does and little more, and Able saw the same across the sector: static sites that hand out information and stop there. Able wanted the opposite. A site with movement that felt alive, as friendly as its new brand, and simple enough for its own team to run.

The site had three audiences to win over: the local authorities who refer children, the care workers Able needs to recruit, and parents. That meant a job board with applications, enquiry forms for referrals and roles, room for every new home, and a CMS Able could run without us.

For the children's privacy and safety, no child could appear anywhere on the site, and no home could be shown more precisely than its town. Those two rules shaped the best ideas on the site.

WEB DESIGN
& BUILD

A design that carries the warmth

It started with a workshop with Able's team in Ipswich. With no children on screen, the warmth had to come from the brand, so Samantha designed the site around it. Ribbons in the brand's pastel colours loop through every page and lead the eye from one section to the next, and headings across the site end on the red full stop from Able's logo. Able's team called the result "very child-centric", which was exactly the aim.

A motion system for the whole site

Max built the site in Webflow, and from the first build the ribbons drew themselves as you scrolled and the headings inked in letter by letter. Able wanted even more life, so we built a motion system for every page. On the home page, the section below the hero waits for the intro and arrives as the last pair of ribbons starts to draw. Across the site, more than 1,100 elements rise into place as they reach the screen, so every page feels as alive as the home page.

A nuthatch that lands on the letters

Able's new identity is built around the nuthatch, a small bird that fiercely defends its home, so we gave it a life on the site. Jack hand-drew the bird and the frames of its flight, and we wrote the code that flies it in. It has ten perches across the site, from the "w" of "we are" on the home page to the footer logo, and it swoops, glides or hovers in, a little differently each time. Every landing was checked pixel by pixel, foot by foot, so its feet sit right on the edge of a letter, a card or the map, with no daylight underneath.

Homes on a map, by town

Local authorities need to see where Able's homes are, and Able can only ever show the town. So the homes page maps every home, open and opening, with each pin placed on its town centre by design. Homes still to open show as outlines, and a menu jumps straight to any one of them. We recoloured Esri's human geography basemap in Able's palette, so even the map looks like Able. Each home has its own page from one CMS template, so adding a home is one new CMS item, pin and all.

Careers, enquiries and a CMS Able runs

Every new home needs a team, so careers got the same care as the homes. The job board filters by contract and area of work, and each role has its own page and application form with a CV upload, so candidates go from advert to application in one place. Enquiries start by asking what they're about, and every form asks how people found Able, so the team can see which channels bring in referrals and staff. Every page has its own search title and description, and new homes, roles and articles get theirs from fields in the CMS. Ten CMS collections run the lot, with a recorded guide, and Able's team now posts its own roles and keeps the team page up to date.
