A Basildon charity's website, with online safety for every age

Web Redesign #  CMS Build #  Web Development

Every Child Online is a charity in Basildon, Essex, that refurbishes donated laptops, tablets and phones for children who don't have a device of their own. We designed and built its new website: the charity's own pages, and Safe & Smart, its online safety hub, with a section each for adults, teens and children.

THE RUNDOWN

Every Child Online was registered as a charity in 2021. People and businesses give it the laptops, tablets and phones they no longer need, and it wipes them, refurbishes them and passes them on to children who'd otherwise go without. It also runs Safe & Smart Online, which helps children, teens and the adults around them stay safe online.

In 2025 the charity came to us for two things at once: a new website for Every Child Online, and a proper home for Safe & Smart. The second meant designing for three very different readers. A parent wants plain answers and the settings to change. A teenager wants to be spoken to like one. A six-year-old needs big, bright pages and a friendly face.

The charity wrote the content, and we edited and proofread it as it came in. Each stage went to the charity's steering group, then to its trustees, for sign-off.

WEB DESIGN
& BUILD

Two sites in one

Every Child Online and Safe & Smart share one website, but they speak to different people. The charity's pages are for anyone with old tech to give or a reason to help. Safe & Smart is for families. Samantha designed both, and gave Safe & Smart a look and a menu of its own, so you always know which side of the site you're on.

With the design signed off by the steering group and the trustees, Maximillian built the site in Webflow. Colour does a job here too. Each age group keeps its own colour, orange for adults, teal for teens and purple for children, from the first click to the last page.

A way in for every age

Safe & Smart starts by asking visitors to pick the option that fits them: adult, teen or child. Each choice opens a section made for that age, with its own guides, stories and tools. On phones the picker first appeared as a pop-up. Before launch we moved it onto the page, where it's easier to read and there's nothing to close.

The children's section is where this shows most. Pico, Moxo and Luno, the site's three characters, lead children through comics, games and guides with titles like Don't Get Hooked by Phantom Phishers! and Battling the Mean Message Monsters. Search engines get something plainer. Each fun title sits on a page whose search title is what a parent would type, like Spotting Online Scams: A Kid's Guide, so the guides can still be found.

Parental controls for over 100 apps

Parental controls only help if you can find them. Safe & Smart has 42 guides covering over 100 apps and games, from Roblox and YouTube to Netflix and Spotify. Each one covers the risks, what to turn on or off, where to find the settings and how to talk to your child about it. A search box narrows the list as you type, and we proofread every guide before launch.

Ready for launch day

Before launch we audited the site from top to bottom and gave every page its own search title and description, more than 160 of them. We moved nine posts across from the old site. We also moved the domain without touching the charity's email, so nobody's inbox went quiet on launch day.

They keep coming back

We kept going after launch. In July we reworked the contact form so each enquiry goes one of three ways, depending on what it's about, and recorded a Loom walkthrough so the charity's team can run the site without us. In September 2026 the site moved into Every Child Online's own Webflow account. The charity edits and publishes it itself now, and keeps coming back to us for more.

The latest job was page speed. At the end of October the charity came back to us to improve its scores in Google's Lighthouse test. By 5 November the performance score on phones had gone from 30 to 70, and on desktop from 84 to 97. On a phone the main content now shows in 6.1 seconds instead of 10.9, and nothing jumps about as it loads. Accessibility went from 79 to 97 on phones and from 78 to 97 on desktop. The site also passes both of Lighthouse's checks for AI agents now, up from none.

Their new site went live in June 2026.

IN THEIR WORDS

"I love the Safe and Smart site. It does everything you want it to do. It's got meat on the bone, and it tells a story."

Mike T, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Every Child Online

FROM THE TEAM

"It felt great to do this for a charity, and it was quite a challenge to build two websites in one. I'm very pleased. Both of them turned out so well and worked so well for what they were meant to do. The Safe and Smart one looks incredibly nice and is full of cool features."
