How AI picks who to recommend

Four things decide it.

01

The list is short now

Google gave people ten links and a page two. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode give one answer with a few names in it. If you're not one of them, you weren't in the running, and the search never shows up in your analytics.

02

AI repeats what it can check

It builds answers from your website, your Google reviews, directories, press and forums like Reddit. When they all say the same thing about what you do and where, you get named. When they're vague or contradict each other, it names someone it's surer about.

03

Vague copy can't be quoted

“We deliver quality solutions for businesses” gives AI nothing to repeat. “Kitchen fitter in Chelmsford, fitted kitchens from £8,000, six weeks from order” does. Services, places, prices and proof. The more specific the page, the easier you are to recommend.

04

Some sites lock AI out by accident

A line in robots.txt, a firewall setting or a page that only appears once JavaScript has run can stop AI crawlers reading your site at all. If they can't read it, you don't exist to them. It's a quick thing to check.

Twenty minutes and your phone

Try this on the train home

01

Ask the AI

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the question your customers ask. “Best accountant in Romford.” “Who fixes commercial boilers in Kent.” Write down every business they name. That's your competition now, and some of them won't be who you expect.

02

Read your homepage out loud

Does the first paragraph say what you do, where, and roughly what it costs? If a stranger couldn't repeat it back, AI can't either.

03

Look yourself up

Check Google, LinkedIn and the directories your trade uses. If the name, address, phone number or services differ anywhere, fix them. Mismatches make AI less sure about you.

04

Answer the five questions

Write down the five questions every customer asks before they buy. If your website doesn't answer each one in a few plain sentences, that's this week's job. Those answers are what AI lifts.

If step one turned up names that aren't yours, that's what the meeting is for.

How we do it

AI search is part of every SEO retainer we run

There's no separate AI package. The work that gets you named in ChatGPT and Gemini overlaps with the work that ranks you on Google, so it runs in the same retainer and shows up in the same monthly report.

Every SEO retainer includes
  • Technical fixes that let AI crawlers read the site
  • Pages written so they can be quoted
  • A Google Business Profile and listings that match the site
  • A monthly report on where you're named, and who's named instead

£1,000

SEO, AI search, digital marketing and web design from Basildon, Essex

SEO, digital marketing and web design. Here's what goes into each.

SEO

SEO starts with a technical audit: crawl errors, Core Web Vitals, indexing, site structure, schema markup and internal links, fixed biggest wins first. Then keyword research that separates buyers from browsers, on-page optimisation, local SEO across your Google Business Profile, and links earned through real outreach to publishers and journalists. Every retainer includes AI search visibility, the work of getting your business cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude who to use.

Digital marketing

Digital marketing is planned around enquiries rather than impressions. Strategy first, then the mix that earns it: paid search and programmatic advertising, content marketing, social media, email and conversion rate optimisation, with GA4 and Google Tag Manager wired in so every lead traces back to the channel that produced it. Branding sits inside it, from logo and identity through to guidelines, so the creative and the campaigns pull in one direction. Every month you get a report written by the person running the account, and it leads with what turned into enquiries.

Web design

Web design is built in Webflow by a certified partner. Custom layouts rather than templates, pages that pass Core Web Vitals, a CMS your team can edit without a developer, and search-ready structure, titles and schema from the first wireframe. Rebuilds are audited and redirected so the rankings survive the move. Prices are published, the calculator gives you a fixed figure in about three minutes, and after launch a care plan from £95 a month covers hosting, backups, security and same week changes.
