TL;DR

Position first, design second. The branding strategies that build recognition and price power, and the vanity work to skip.

Strategy is deciding what you're for. Design comes after.

Most branding conversations start in the wrong place, with colours and logos, the fun bit. Strategy comes first, and strategy is a set of decisions: who you serve, what you promise them, why they'd pick you over the two competitors they're also looking at, and what you sound like when you say it. Get those written down and the design work has something to be right about. Skip them and you get decoration.

Pick a position and hold it

A brand that tries to appeal to everyone reads as nothing to anyone. The strongest small-business brands we see are narrow on purpose: the accountants who only do trades, the gym that's proudly not for beginners, the agency that publishes its prices while the rest of the industry hides them. Narrow feels risky and works, because a clear position gets remembered and repeated, and repetition is how brands are built, one recommendation at a time.

The concession: positioning means turning some people away, and it stings the first few times. It's still cheaper than being forgettable to everybody.

Consistency compounds

Branding pays out like interest. The same look, the same tone, the same promise kept, at every contact, for years. No single touchpoint feels significant, and the accumulation is the whole asset: recognition, trust, the ability to hold your prices when a cheaper rival appears. Which is also why the most damaging branding decision a small business makes is the casual redesign every eighteen months. Every reset spends the recognition you'd banked.

Make it operational

A strategy that lives in a PDF nobody opens is theatre. The test of a real one is whether it changes Tuesday afternoon: does the person writing your quotes know what tone to use, does whoever posts on social know what you would and wouldn't say, does the next supplier get handed rules or a shrug. Write the guidelines short enough to be used. One page beats forty.

Measure it like an asset

You cant put a precise number on a small brand, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling theatre of a different kind. But you can watch the proxies. Branded search, how many people type your name rather than your category, is the cleanest. Repeat rate. Referral share. Whether a price rise held. If those climb while your look and promise stay steady, the strategy is working. If you're spending on brand and none of them move in a couple of years, change the strategy, not just the logo.

We build brands for a living at Cold, and the pattern across the good ones is dull: decide, write it down, apply it everywhere, leave it alone. The businesses that struggle are rarely short of creativity. They're short of decisions.
